Three-Story Building Razed In Anambra

It was crying and wailing last Tuesday when a three-storey building located at No. 5 Ideani street, Odume layout, Obosi, Idemili North local Government Area, Anambra state was gutted by fire allegedly caused by the epileptic power supply by Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, to the Area. Daily Independent reliably gathered that the incident which has sent the entire occupants of the building packing, started at about 12 pm on the fateful day and lasted till 10pm, defying all efforts of the fire servicemen to quench the ravaging inferno. Looters, it was learnt capitalised on the bad situation to steal some of the items as there was no security operatives’ presence during the incident that blew off the roof of the biulding with its thick smoke blowing from the ceiling. Properties estimated into millions of naira were said to have been lost resulting in the tenants searching for where to settle in the mean time as they have been rendered homeless. According to a tenant of the building who pleaded anonymity, “most of us have gone out when the fire started at about 12pm on Tueday” “It was caused by power supply by EEDC because for some time now they supply us with epileptic power supply. So when they brought this one, it was so high that some of the bulbs burnt/exploded and it sparked off in one of the flats at the third floor, (middle flat) and the whole flats went on flame and before you know it thick smoke had enveloped the entire flats in the third floor and then extended to the whole building” “Funny enough the officials of EEDC stormed the scene immediately in a vehicle, cut some cables connected to the building and left as fast as they came in to avoid being lynched by irate youths who were booing them. Their action could be likened to criminal act as they can not deny being responsible to our present predicament” “To worsen the situation, looters who pretended to be assisting us had field day stealing the victims’ evacuated belomgings as there was no security operatives’ presence to prevent them from the stealing and this made us to lose properties worth millions of naira” Also a sympathser who identified himself as Mathew Kele, said that, “I was just passing and on getting to the building I heared, fire!” “I then distaned my self and on looking at the top of the building I saw thick smoke and there were explosions from almost every flat from the third floor which forced me to ran away and watched the scene from a distance. Infact the EEDC should be made to accout for the damage because I saw when they arrived almost immediately the fire broke out and they cut some cables and left without delay. Later I heard there was high power supply that sparked off and extended to the entir building”. “I was here when the first team of fire service men arrived and on battling the inferno their water got finished. The two other teams that came almost the same time tried their best but the fire resisted their efforts may be because of the gas cylinders and gen sets said to have been kept by the occupants of the entire third floor as they helped to fuel the fire” Another person who claimed to be one of the rescuers who simply identified himself as Zokky, added that, “the fire servicemen tried but the fire fought them back as it went wild at a point becausr of explosive materials kept by the occupants and we thank God there is no death record” “looters were part of the problem because nobody had time for them and they capitalised on that to steal as there was no security presence, #50,000 and laptop were stolen and there were other items they stole which I am not ready to know now” A woman who hinted she was a tenant but pleaded not to be mentioned said, “the world is funny, just within a twinkle of an eye we lost all that we have because of epileptic power supply. I have nothing to say than that the suffering continues, we will not give up to the devil” Counting their losses, another tenant who also pleaded anonymity said that, “even if the fire that started about 12 noon stopped about late in the evening, the losses have been there before it stopped and they worth millions of naira. Government should come to our rescue and the EEDC should compensate us” he pleaded. He stated further that, “looters in the pretext that they were assisting the victims to evacuate their bag and baggage, had a field day as there was no police and other security agents’ presence and made away with some of the evacuated items that included, laptop, money, among others
